He was born Madison Blaine Wells, after his parents were divorced. When his mother, Elsie, was subsequently living with her parents, she resumed using her maiden name. As a result Blaine is listed in 1930 as Blaine McVay, and in 1940 as Blaine M. McVay. It also appears that a second birth certificate was issued with his McVay surname.
He was married to Norma Brokaw on 16 Feb 1942, and was married when he enlisted in the Army.
He enlisted in the Army during WWII on 7 Oct 1942, and was released 30 Nov 1945.

MOUNT VERNON — Norma Gene McVay, 82, of Columbus Road, Mount Vernon, passed away on Sunday, June 11, 2006, at Country Court Nursing Center in Mount Vernon. She was born on Feb. 13, 1924, in Fredericktown to the late Charles and Madeline (Bradrick) Brokaw. Norma worked as a lab tech for Knox Community Hospital. She was a member of the Owl Creek Baptist church and had volunteered many years as a Knox County 4-H advisor. She is survived by her loving family, a son, Norman (Judith Ann) McVay of Fredericktown; three grandchildren, Rebecca (Kevin) Henthorn, Norman Dale McVay and Neldon (Shawnee) McVay Jr.; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rex (Mona) Brokaw of Ankenytown and Max (Parthenia) Brokaw of Mount Vernon; three sisters, Joretta Auten of Fredericktown; Delia "Dee" (Ken) Reynolds of Mount Vernon and Deanna "Dee" Ridgeway of Mount Vernon. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine McVay; and her son, Neldon McVay Sr. Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home where a funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Robert Heizer will officiate. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Owl Creek Church Building Fund, 4044 Owl Creek Church Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050.
