Misc. Notes
Son of Johannes Mattmüller and Barbara Herbster, headstone lists him as George Motmiller. He and Anna changed their name to MotMIller and Miller over time, and their children used both MotMiller and Miller on census and other records, with a couple using Mot or Matt as a middle name.
The obituary for his son John includes a family history which says George was born in 1876. But his headstone says he was 72y 9m 20d when he died on 10 Mar 1843, which would indicate May 18, 1770.
The original Miller family story that has been passed down, as related by Mahlon Sellars, was that the Mattmuellers were from Baden-Baden, Germany. They left Germany via Hamburg around 1816 possibly on a ship named Molly, but that is unverified. The ship was wrecked, probably by rough waters thru and outside the English Channel. The family was rescued off the coast of the Maderias Islands (Portugal). The family stayed a year, and then continued their journey until they arrived in Philadelphia, PA in October of 1818.
During the ocean journey the family lost a fourth child, possibly Johan Jacob. It is believed Anna Maria was pregnant with Wm. Matt when they arrived, because his birthdate is 28 Mar 1819.
Upon arrival, Johan and his wife (Anna) Maria signed papers on 19 Oct 1818 to indenture themselves to Wm McClellan Jr and Joseph Thornton (apparently jointly) for two years and six months for the amount of $120. They also gave their consent for the indenture of their 3 children who came on the boat with them:
Maria Mattmuller Jr to William McClellan and Joseph Thornton for 4 years 3 months, with 6 weeks of schooling each year, and two suits of clothes (one new) upon completion, for a consideration of $30.
Maria Barbara Mattmuller to William McClellan for 8 years 3 months, with 6 weeks of schooling each year, and two suits of clothes (one new) plus $10 upon completion, for a consideration of $22.
John George Mattmuller Jr to William McClellan for 9 years, with 6 weeks of schooling each year, and two suits of clothes (one new) plus $20 upon completion, for a consideration of $20.50
From this it is assumed that they were poor, and that based on the amount of money and time of indenture, Maria was oldest and John the youngest.
[from obituary of son John] When he had served his time and thus paid back the expense of his passage, his master gave him a horse, saddle and bridle, as used to be done in the case of a bound boy who had reached the age of freedom —21 years.
Listed in 1830 Fayette Co PA census as Geo M. Miller, near Jacob Wells with:
Males - 1<5, 1=5-10, 1=10-15, 1=20-30, 1=50-60 Female - 1=10-15, 1=15-20, 1=40-50
Listed in the 1840 Tuscarawas Co OH census as George Miller:
Males - 1=10-14, 1=15-19, 1=60-69 Female - 1=15-19, 1=50-59
There are William Miller and Jacob Miller families listed nearby (same page)
George dropped dead one Sunday morning on his way to church, and he is buried in West Union cemetery. He was small in stature, being only five feet two inches in height, but was a very powerful man.
His headstone lists his date of death, and age as 72y 9m 20d, which calculates his birth as 21 May 1770.
