Evelyn Veronica English was 6 years old on 4/18/1906, the day of the great earthquake and fire of San Francisco. They lost thier house and lived in a tent in Golden Gate Park.
In 1920 she is listed as Evelyn Gray (19, IL) a Dept store clerk and wife of William Albert Gray (32, IL) a post office clerk and living with the family of her sister Edith McDonald in Chicago. Her widowed mother was also living with them. (although the census shows her & Wm as both single). She gave birth to William Joseph Gray on 19 Mar 1920 in Chicago.
William died in 1924 and she was listed as Evelyn Veronica Gray, a widow, when she married Charles Suttles later that year in Oakland, CA.
They are listed in San Francisco in 1930, with her son listed as Joseph Suttles (10, IL) along with their common children Richard, Geraldine and Ralph. Her nephew Richard Everett (16, CA) is also with them.
In 1940 Evelyn is listed with Charles and her 6 children: Joseph W. (20, IL), Richard J. (18, CA), Geraldine C. (15, CA), Ralph M. (14, CA), Harold T. (6, CA) and Raymond C. (5 mos, CA).
Evelyn and Charles were apparently divorced, as she was re-married to Bjarne Petrus Leira (20 Dec 1913 Norway - 15 Aug 1966 San Francisco) on 7 Nov 1945 in Oakland, CA.
She had 7 children and outlived three husbands. She was the widow of Bjarnie Leira who predeceased her, at the time of her death.
SSDI says 10 Dec, while cemetery says 6 Dec.
