George W. Porch, proprietor of the George W. Porch Piano Company, 212 Franklin Street, Johnstown, is one of the well known men of this city. He was born in Westmoreland County, Pa., July 2, 1870, and is a son of Jacob and Susanna (Harmon) Porch, both natives of Westmoreland County. Jacob Porch was a son of George Porch, who was a farmer in Westmoreland County. Susanna Harmon was a daughter of Andrew Harmon. The Harmon family originally came from Germany and settled in Westmoreland County, where they were engaged in agriculture.
The great-great-grandfather of George W. Porch was killed by the Indians, and his great-grandfather was taken prisoner when a small child and was brought up by the Indians.
George W. Porch received his education in the schools of Westmoreland County, Pa., and worked on his father's farm until he was 19 years of age.
On September 14, 1889, he came to Johnstown and entered into a partnership with his brother, W. W. Porch, in the piano business, the firm being known as the Porch Brothers Piano Company. Their first business location was in the Park Building, on Locust Street, a temporary structure built after the flood. Later they moved to where the U. S. Bank Building now stands. The partnership continued until 1897, when the partnership was dissolved and George W. Porch established his own piano business, later taking his brother Clark in as a partner and eventually selling the business to Clark Porch.For a time Mr. Porch conducted a branch storeat Altoona. In 1903 George W. Porch opened a piano store at Ebensburg, which he successfully conducted until 1908, when he returned to Johnstown and purchased his oldbusiness from his brother Clark. This store is an exclusive piano store and has a well established business. Mr. Porch is a representative for the following piano companies: Cable-Nelson, Chickering, Milton, Sohmer, Hazelton Bros., Mehlin & Sons, Gulbransen, Weaver and York and other well known makes.
In June, 1921, Mr. Porch was united in marriage with Miss Beulah B Yiluging, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Yilnging, both now deceased. Mrs. Beulah Porch was born at Osceola Mills, Pa. She is a graduate nurse of Maryland General Hospital, Baltimore, Md. To Mr. and Mrs. Porch two children have been born: Helen I. and George W., Jr.
Mr. Porch is a Republican. He belongs to the Methodist Church and the Knights of Pythias, Linton Lodge No. 451, of which he is a charter member and past chancellor. Mr. Porch is an energetic business man, aud a citizen who holds the high respect of his community.
