V.R. HACKETT KILLED NEAR ACME BY BOLT OF LIGHTNING
Vio R. Hackett, 46 years of age was instantly killed yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at his home miles north of Acme when he was struck by lightning. Following the rain yesterday afternoon, Mr. Hackett went from his home to irrigate a small feed plot. Rainwater was coming down a draw and he was diverting it into his feed plot.
Mrs. Hackett was helping him and after a second shower, Mr. Hackett asked her to go to the house as he feared she was going to get wet. Mrs. Hackett said that she had gotten nearly to the house when there was a streak of lightning. She said that she looked back in the direction where she had just left her husband but did not see him.
Mrs. Hackett after reaching the house continued to look for her husband, finally being able to locate him She rushed to him and found him on his back with one arm folded over his chest. She realized immediately that he was dead and went at once for help, being forced to go eight miles.
The body was brought to this city and this morning a coroner's jury viewed the remains and gave a verdict to the effect that the death was accidental, being caused by a bolt of lightning.
The lightning struck Mr. Hackett on the top of the head, tearing a hole in the skull, breaking the jaw bone and passing out through the left leg. When found, his clothing was entirely off the body and both shoes were several feet away. The shovel he was holding at the time was torn into many pieces.
V. R. Hackett had made his home in this section of the state for five years, comng here from Oklahoma. Besides his wife he leaves one son Walter, and a sister in Enid. Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Friday morning from the Talmage chapel. Burial will be made in South Park.

HACKETT DEATH DETAILS RELATED
Details of the death of V. R. Hackett, 47, of Roswell, New Mexico, former Enid man, who was
killed on July 26 when struck by a bolt of lightng, was received in Enid today when W. M. Hackett,
77, 410 North Grand Avenue, father of the dead man, returned from the funeral services.
On that day, Mr. Hackett who left Enid fifteen years ago to operate a cattle ranch near Roswell, was a short distance from the ranch house opening an irrigation ditch. His wife was with him. A small cloud which looked like it might contain rain was noticed and Hackett told his wife she had better go to the house or she might get wet.
Before she had traversed the 100 yards to the dwelling a vivid flash of lightning scurried across the sky to be followed by a mighty clap of thunder.
Looking back Mrs. Hackett could not see her husband and returning to the ditch she found him dead.
The lightning had struck him on the back of the head, fracturing the skull. He was stripped of his clothes to the waist and the lightning going through his body had torn both shoes from his feet.
The body was buried at Roswell where Mrs. Hackett has decided to make her home. She will dispose of the ranch, according to Mr. Hackett.
