Rites Set for Philanthropist Mark Carfer
Funeral services for Mark Carter, 88, Russian-born philanthropist and pioneer businessman in Los Angeles, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Malinow & Silverman Mortuary. Mr. Carter died Tuesday. He was president of the City of Hope from 1936 to 1939 and had served on
the hospital's board since 1930. In 1949, he was lifetime honorary president. His son, Victor, followed in his footsteps, serving as president from 1949 to 1957. He also is a honorary
lifetime president. The elder Carter was former vice president of the United Jewish Welfare campaign and for many years was president of its division for organizations. He was vice president of Organization for Rehabilitation through Training, an agency aiding refugees arriving in the United States. He was named ORT Man of the Year in 1966. Mr. Carter came to Los Angeles in 1921 and established the Carter Hardware Co. In addition to his son, Victor, he leaves another son, William; four daughters, Mrs. Shura Kompaniez, Mrs. Marie Horowitz, Mrs. Mathilde Moore and Mrs. Bella Gans.

Her first husband was Joseph Hirsh Netshayevsky (1872-1929), who she married 21 Nov 1910 in Los Angeles, and with whom she immigrated from Russia with in 1920, before being natualized.
Her two sons, Leo (1911) and Billy (1923) lived with her after her remarriage to Mark Carter in 1930, with Billy adopting the Carter surname.
