Moshe lived in Rostov, Russia after his father moved there from Negnewicze, Belarus.
Wealthy industrialists in Russia.  They owned two factories.  The Bolsheviks came along and started murdering wealthy and powerful people.  The state confiscated the factories. 
Moshe's descendants got out alive by bribing people with gems that were sewn in their clothes.  They came to the US, almost broke, in 1921.  They changed their name to Carter, moved to Los Angeles, started a hardware store that became Builders Emporium, and caught the California construction wave after WWII.  They sold that business, then bought Republic Pictures and caught Hollywood as it took off.  Along the way, they acquired raw land in what became downtown LA.  They ended up rubbing elbows with US presidents, Hollywood royalty, and early leaders of Israel (Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan, Yitzchak Rabin, et al).  An amazing riches to rags to super riches story, while learning a new language and a new culture along the way.
