An old family note says that John T. Wells joined the army to fight in the Civil War, and that he fell in love, married and stayed in the south.
There is a John T. Wells living with his wife Rosa (Miller) in Yadkin County, North Carolina in the 1870 census. He was born in Indiana, and was the right age. Additionally, Civil War records for a John Wells say that he was discharged in North Carolina. And his two sons were named David and William - the same as his half-brothers. So there is a strong possibility that the John T. Wells who lived in, and raised his family in Yadkin County, North Carolina is the son of Thomas Wells, although it has not yet been proven conclusively.
Listed in the 1880 census as John T. Wells (48, IN) a farmer with wife Rosa (46, NC) and his mix of step children and children - Thursy A. Groce (26, NC), Willie F. Groce (21, NC), Isaac Groce (18, NC), Louessy Groce (15, NC), David Wells (9, NC) and William G. Wells (7, NC).
