Joseph I. Rotenberg
We have lost a true San Franciscan — a loyal Giants and 49ers fan. That home run against the Dodgers on June 28th, 2024 was a win for Joe. His childhood career dream was to be a cable car conductor. Joe attended Argonne Grammar, Presidio Junior High and Lowell High school. He went to Cal followed by pharmacy school at at University of Colorado, Boulder. Joe married the love of his life, Ona and they raised their two daughters, Jill and Cyd in Tiburon. Joe touched many with his deep personal interest in the well-being of others. He was regularly late for dinner from his San Francisco pharmacy, Joe’s, because he was delivering medicine to his patients. Joe treated all in his life with care, compassion, and encouragement. Restaurant dinners were long evenings because Joe engaged in conversation with any employee who came to the table. He made everyone feel valued and he respected those who had pride in their work. He exuberantly enjoyed tennis, travel, hiking, pharmacy education and mentoring younger pharmacists. Joe’s favorite hobby by far was cheerleading as Papa to his five adoring grandchildren. He was a pillar for Allie, Robin, and Danielle Lustig, and Blake Cullen, and Maxwell and William Braker. In an unsurprising twist to Joe’s final days, Ona, Jill and Cyd comforted Joe’s many caregivers. Joe will be deeply missed by his wife of 66 years, Ona, his daughters, Jill and Cyd, sons-in-law Mitch Lustig and Matthew Braker and his five grandchildren. A private memorial will be held later this summer. Donations gratefully accepted to bythebayhealth.org who provided Joe with exemplary care.
