Mr. Sumners was the director of materials management at Mercy Health Center in Manhattan for the past 13 years. He earlier was a restaurant manager in the Manhattan area. He was born Dec. 26, 1948 in Wamego, the son of Allan and Maxine Bowman Sumners. He graduated from Wamego High School in 1966. He earned a bachelor's degree in social science at Kansas State University in 1971. Mr. Sumners was a member of the Kansas Association for Hospital Purchasing and Materials Management, where he served on the board of directors and was past president. He also was a member of the Association for Healthcare Resource and Materials Management, Central Plains EXPO, where he was a board member and past treasurer and Delta Colony Phi Gamma Delta. He married Christine Smith in 1968. He later married Pamela Rae Freeman in October 1972.
Survivors include his parents, Allan and Maxine Sumners, Wabaunsee Township; a daughter, Robin Michelle Sumners, Los Angeles; three sons, Nathan Michael Sumners, Valley Center, Seth Daniel Sumners, Wichita, and Jacob Thomas Sumners, Manhattan; and two brothers, John W. Sumners, Wabaunsee, and Robert D. Sumners, Westmoreland.
Services were Monday May 22 at R. HJ. Evans Mortuary in Wamego. Burial will be in the Wabaunsee Township Cemetery in Wabaunsee.
