Col. W. S. Conrow Dies; Customs Inspection Chief
Was in 69th Year - Served in World War, on Border and in Philippines
Col. William S. Conrow, chief of the inspection division of the Customs Service for the Port of New York and former commanding officer of the 102d Engineers, died this morning in his 69th year at his home, 636 Eastern Parkway, after an illness of five months. He is survived only by his wife. Colonel Conrow was born in Monmouth County, New Jersey, on June 1, 1862, and joined the Customs Service as a night inspector in New York. He served in the Philippines with the 43d Infantry, became a captain, and in 1901 was appointed provincial treasurer of Layte, P. I. In 1905 he returned to the United States and to the Customs Service. He resigned in 1916 to go to the border with the 22d Engineers, returned to the Customs in 1917 and resigned again to go to France with the 102d Engineers, returning to the Customs Service in 1919. He became chief of the inspection division on March 1, 1928. In spite of a malignant throat affliction which began five months ago Colonel Conrow stuck to his desk until three weeks ago. He was known as a strict disciplinarian, but one who treated all his subordinates fairly, and instilled military spirit and discipline into the 1,400 inspectors under his command.
