Misc. Notes
The oldest of 6 children, he was born at the Carver home, as the Homestead was not yet completed. (Alexandria Twp is now Kingwood Twp.) He was a namesake of his Grandfather Lewis. He grew to manhood at the Homestead together with the 3 years the family spent in Philadelphia. He was a man of intelligence. He learned the trade of millright from his father; he also secured a teacher's certificate and taught school in the East. In 1836 at the age of 21, having heard of employment in Western Penn. and dissatisfied with the tide of affairs in N. J., he decided to go "West". He came to Fayette Co along the Monongehala River. Here he worked at the millright trade; he also taught school here and farmed. In April, 1851 the family (6 kids) moved in a road wagon to the vicinity of Batesville, Ohio, which had recently been taken from Guernsey Co to help make up the newly formed Noble Co. They first settled in Beaver Twp on Beaver Creek below the present site of the Palestine Church. They then lived other places along Beaver Creek, during which time 3 more children were born. Here he taught school, and worked some at the millright trade, but the pay in these was too small to support a large family. About 1860 they moved to the Finley place in Seneca Twp on Mud Run and had their next child, Aseph. They then moved to Batesville and from there to Glady Valley, where Ulysses was born. They finally moved to Dougherty Station in Monroe Co, to Calais, back to Glady Valley and ended up near Middlebourne, Tyler Co, W Va in 1874, where some of their children lived. He inherited the Quaker faith and stuck to it, was a staunch Republican, and was a kind and honest neighbor and friend to all. He died after being invalid for many years from the effects of a fever sore at his knee which he carried from early life. At the time of his death all 11 of his children were living, along with 71 grandchildren.
