In the 1851 Canada census he is a farmer (49, US) with wife Sally (40, CAN) and children Lavina (18), George (17), Henry (15), Sarah Ann (14), Adaliza (10), Celice (7), Alice (3), and Selena M. (<1). He and the children are Lutheran, while his wife is Methodist, and all except him were born in Williamsburg.
In 1861, he is listed as 61, and they had a school teacher, Robert Gordon, living with them. His family consisted of Sally (49), George (24), Eliza (19), Malissa (16), Alice (12), and Selina (10).
Listing for what may be him in 1871 Ontario census for Williamsburg, Dundas Co. (div 2, pg 36) at age 70 as a farmer of Lutheran religion and German descent, born in the United States.
There is a family story about John and his son Henry having a falling out about 1890, and Henry left and went back to the States with $100 John gave him and told him that was all he was getting.
Listed again in 1881 Canadian census for Williamsburg (div 1, pg 10) at age 79 as a married Lutheran Storekeeper of German descent, born in the US. With him is his wife Sarah (69, Ont), son George (45 Ont) a railroad boss, and dau Alice (32 Ont).
Listed in 1891 at age 90 and a widower, with the family of daughter Alice.
