WELLS - Mrs. Susan C. Wells, 73, died at 1:15 this morning at her home in Mentor of Bright’s disease, after a residence there of 35 years. She had been ill for some time. She leaves besides her husband J. R. Wells, two children, Minnie A. McCloud, of Elgin, Neb. and William Wells of Mentor. There is also one sister, Mrs. Martha Humrickhouse of Illinois. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at ten o’clock from the Methodist church at Mentor, and interment will be made there. Rev. Daniels will be in charge.

He appears to be listed as a farm laborer on the Logan farm in 1860, age 21 and born in KY. In 1870 (35, KY) he is living with his mother and brother William in Illinois.
In 1880 he is listed as a laborer (38, KY) with his wife Susan (33, TN), daughter Minnie (9) and son William (2), both born in Illinois.
He is in the 1900 Kansas census as James R. Wells, a day laborer (60, KY), with his wife Susan C. (Sept, 1846 TN) of 29 yrs. It lists them as having 2 living children.
Listed with his son William (30, IL) in 1910 Kansas census, as having his own income (71, KY) with his wife Susan (60, TN) of 40 yrs.
He is listed as J. R. Wells, widowed (80, KY) and living with his son William in 1920.
An April 3rd 1920 newspaper clipping from Salina, Saline Co, KS states:

By 1925 his son was also widowed, and his neice Dorothy McCloud (21, NE) was also living with them, and working as a servant. He is listed aa J. R. Wells (85, KY).
