He registered for the Draft in WWI on Sept 12 1918. At the time, he was listed as a laborer for the Allen Furniture Co. and was living at 1113 Harrison in Shelbyville. He was living with his parents there in 1920.
In 1930 he is married 3 years, working as a cabinet maker (29), with his wife Martha E. (25, IN) and daughters Marilyn J. (2 yrs, 2 mos IN) and Mabel L. (2 mos IN).
Living in Carthage in 1937 when his father died, and in 1938 when his mother died.
He is listed in Blue River in the 1940 census, as a farmer (39, IN) with his wife Martha (35, IN) and children Marilyn (12), Lavonne (10), Carl (7), and Melvin (4 mos). It shows him having completed the 8th grade and Martha high school, and that they were living in Shelbyville in 1935.
Chandis and his wife were in Henry Co in 1950, with Lavonne and the 3 boys.

Martha Wells
Martha E. Wells, 85, Greenfield, former Charlottesville resident, died Tuesday at Hancock Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 28, 1905, in Hancock County, she was the daughter of Charles W. and Mabel (Burk) Main. She was a member of Charlottesville United Methodist Church, and Jackson Township Home Economics Club. Survivors include daughters Marilyn J. Dawson, and Mabel Lavonne Miller, both of Greenfield; sons Carl E. Wells, Middletown, Melvin W. Wells, Charlottesville, and Raymond E. Wells, Greenfield; sister Florence M. Everhardt, Wisconsin; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chandis Wells, in 1958. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Pasco Memorial Mortuary with the Rev. Harry Cooper officiating. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery. Friends may call 3-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. 6:30 p.m.
