A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 1996, in the First Christian Church in Vernonia for Maude R. Beck Wells, a 65-year resident of Vernonia who died Sept. 21 at age 91.
Mrs. Wells was born March 19, 1905, in Holdman. Her maiden name was Beck. She graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1923 and attended Central Washington College of Education for two years. She later attended Portland State University and Western Oregon State College and obtained a bachelor's degree at age 60.
In 1928, she married Lewis ''Lester''; he who died in 1958. She taught elementary school from 1924 to 1928 and later taught at the Vernonia Grade School for 12 years and retired in from 1960 until retiring in 1972. She was had been a member of the church since 1931.
Surviving are her sons, Lester L. of Vernonia and William O. of Portland; daughters, Patricia K. Adsit and Martha R., both of Portland, Margaret A. Wells of Payette, Idaho, and Ruby W. Ifversen of Honolulu; brothers, Oliver Beck of Echo and John Beck of Eugene; sisters, Lenora Shearer of Estacada and Kathleen Akins of Milwaukie; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Fuiten-Rose Chapel in Vernonia.

He was living in Eltopia, WA when he registered for the Draft in 1917.
Listed in Leroy, WA in 1920 as a grain farmer with his wife Florence E. (19, IA). By 1930 he had moved to Yacolt and is listed as (re)married 2 years to Maud R. (25, OR) and working as a butcher in a logging camp. His name is spelled Louis in 1930.
They were living in Vernonia in 1940, with him still listed as a butcher (46, WA) in the logging camp. His family consisted of Maude (35, OR) and children Martha R. (9), Lester L. (7), William O. (6), Patricia K. (4), Margaret A. (2), and Ruby F. (9 mos).
His headstone lists his death as 3 Sept 1958, and says he was a PVT in the 90 Spruce Squadron in WWI.
