Joseph was the 5th son and 9th child.
One of the owners of large tract of land in Matchaponix including the section where Spotswood is located, evidently inherited from his father, John, and grandfather, Henry. Joseph and his father were members and Vestrymen of St. Peter’s Church, Spotswood, NJ. The following is from the church records:
“The first settlers of Spotswood and vicinity were descendants of the Church of England who came from the Elizabethtown Plantation and Staten Island. The material for the church was procured in 1765, and in June persons were employed to prepare them for building, under charge of Andrew Smith. In 1757 the building was raised, but was not fit for use until 1759. At the meeting on Aug 1, 1751 among the list of Vestrymen is the name of John Perrine. On Aug 8, 1768, the records show Daniel and Joseph among those present. On Aug 27, 1770, Daniel and John Perrine were chosen as Warden, and Joseph Perrine, Vestryman. At this meeting it was agreed to procure a deed for the lot on which the church was erected. May 24, 1774, Joseph and John Perine were re-elected. The latter died in 1779. May 20, 1787, Joseph appears again as a church officer. His last record appears May 17, 1768. He died Sept 4, 1791. On June 1, 1819, the name of his son John appears (the father of Judge John of Spotswood.) The following epitah can be read on his tombstone in Story-Hill Cemetery:
“In memory of Joseph Perrine,
who died Sept. 4, 1791, age 58 years.
Now my soul knows what to do,
Thus shall I with boldness stand,
Numbered with the faithful few,
Owned and saved at thy right hand.”
Homestead located on road from Englishtown to Spotswood, in Matchaponix. Still in fair state of preservation and owned by Mr. Luther Dey of Englishtown in 1902.
Joseph married Margaret McFerran in June 1762, and was a minute-man in the Revolution. The following children were born to them: Joseph, Robert, Catherine, Margaret, William, Henry I., John and James.
