Nicholas may have died in the Civil War, as she is listed alone in the 1870 census with her 3 daughters.
After her husbands death, she remarried John H. Utley on 16 Sep 1872 in Posey Co, IN, with whom she is listed in 1880 in Fairview, MO, and then widowed in 1900 and 1910 with daughter Malinda Kilmer in Illinois. The 1900 census states that she had 7 children, of whom only 3 were living; and by 1910 only 2 were living.

Enlisted in Company A, Indiana 65th Infantry Regiment on 20 Aug 1862. Mustered out on 17 Jul 1865. His military records say he was taken sick from exposure and in the hospital at Louisville in Dec 1864; then notes “Sick in Hospital at Louisville, KY. since 1/21/65.” when he was discharged in July 1865. And the application for his wife’s survivor benefits further states regarding his death on 17 Sep 1865 in Posey Co, IN - he “had chronic diarrhea & was also attacked with typhoid...was sick all time up to death, was a sound man when he entered service.”
