By 1930 he was living with his widowed grandmother, Mary Recklein (71, IL), as Clarence Wells (13, IL).
When married in 1949, he had received his M.A. degree at Washington University, and beloged to Sigma Xi fraternity. A member of the faculty of St Louis Country Day School, he served for four and a half years in the Army.

Wells, C. Robert of Kirkwood, Missouri, died Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at the age of 101. Loving husband of the late Margaret E. Wells; devoted father of Robert A., James S. (Diane), and Ellen J. Underhill; caring grandfather of Michael B. Wells, Karilyn N. Wells, William R. Underhill, and Charlotte L. Underhill; great-grandfather of S. William Wells. He was born in East St. Louis on January 5, 1917 to the late Clarence H. and Jane S. Wells. As a boy, he was active in Scouting, becoming an Eagle Scout. As a teen, he worked three summers on the aquatics staff at Dan Beard's camp in Pennsylvania. He earned degrees from Blackburn College and Washington University. In WWII, he served in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he taught at St. Louis Country Day School between 1945-1959 and 1961-19 79, and at Kirkwood High School between 1959-1961. He served as elder and as clerk of the Session at First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood. He remained active in the Boy Scouts, serving as a scoutmaster and as an Eagle Scout presenter. He was a longtime member of the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Webster Groves Nature Society, and the St. Louis Opera Guild. Services: Visitation 2:00-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 24 at BOPP Chapel, 10610 Manchester Rd., Kirkwood. Memorial service 1:00 p.m., Wed., April 25 at First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood, 100 E. Adams Ave. Memorial contributions to First Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood, or the Greater St. Louis Area Council, Boy Scouts of America are greatly appreciated.
