Misc. Notes
As a girl, during the fishing seasons, she worked at "bleeding" and salting herring in her father's warehouse, where fish was prepared for shipment abroad.
Knudiana was "considered a remarkable woman." She truly was in many respects. She was a stoic in the face of trials, ready also to venture out into the unknown and often dangerous future. It was she, not Jacob, who took the initiative in emigrating to America, in migrating farther west in Dakota, and in readiness to move
to Alberta. Of course, one factor was a mother's desire to live where her children were.

Misc. Notes
Christened Jakob Johannes, as Johannes was a brother of his Danish grandmother, and that name was according to her wish, and Jakob was for his uncle, Jakob Nesheim.
Jacob was the youngest child and only son in his home. His father, Mikkel Stöle, died the year he was born. This made a perfect setting for him to be a "spoiled child," which undoubtedly he was, with an easy-going and indulgent mother at the head of the house.
As a young man, hid time was divided between land and sea . From April to October he was a farmer; from November until March, a fisherman. In fishing he was in partnership with three or four others to make a crew
of five or six men who shared expenses and profits. They seldom went north of Bergen, even for the herring, though the larger fishing crews went far up to the northern (Lofoten) coast. Such large crews did nothing but fish all year round.

1906 Canada census says they immigrated to Canada in 1903.
He was living in Norbo, Alberta, Canada in 1909 when his son immigrated to the USA.
He apparently followed and is listed in the 1910 North Dakota census as a farmer (Aug 1837, NOR), married 39 yrs and immigrated in 1886, with 9 of their 12 children still living. With him is wife Knudiana (Mar 1840, NOR), son Rosenburg (Feb 1875, NOR), Amalia (Feb 1878, NOR), and Knud (Apr 1886, NOR). They are one page over from his son Haakon’s family.
