Rawson, Florence Annie 90, Jan. 21, 1921 - Dec. 17, 2011
Florence Annie Rawson was born in San Francisco, Cali., on January 21, 1921 to Edwin Platt Rawson and Lillian Anabell Middleton. Her sister Lillian Doris was born three years later. She received both bachelor's and master's degrees from San Francisco State College, and a teaching certificate from the University of California, Berkeley. She taught English at Balboa High School for many years, and became department chair, vice-principal, then principal of the school.
She raised five children: Robert Edwin Emberton, Mark Raymond Lubeck, Edwin Andrew Cohen, Henry Kenneth Cohen, and Marguerite Patricia Cohen, and helped in the rearing of two stepdaughters Susan Sturgeon and Barbara Blalock. Her family remembers her energy and dynamism, which pushed us all to achieve. She married and divorced four times, and encouraged us all to become financially independent, whatever our marriage status.
To fully enjoy the birth of her second grandson, Florence retired to Portland in 1989. Florence's family remembers her with pride and gratitude for her amazing energy, intelligence, determination to make the world a better place, her love of life and love for those who shared these values. Her other achievements and interests included: American Federation of Teachers (Union Organizer); Political Organizer and Protester; Grandmother; Champion for Peace and Social Justice; Supporter and worker in the Unitarian Church; World Traveler; Member of Eastern Star; Student of the Spanish language; Amateur Archeologist; Gardener; Bee Keeper; Seamstress; Knitter; Reader; Devoted friend to many. Ten years ago at age 80 she went to Seattle to participate in the WTO protests. Had her health permitted it, she certainly would have been a part of Occupy Portland. She was a devoted Unitarian/Universalist for over 50 years. Florence suffered a stroke eight years ago. She made a remarkable recovery, yet never regained the independence that she cherished so deeply, gradually declined in strength in recent years, and passed away on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011. We want to thank the staff at the Portland Odd Fellows Home who loved and cared for her during this final passage, along with Kaiser Hospice Services. Her friends and family invite you to join us in a celebration of her life on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, 2 p.m. in the Eliot Chapel of the First Unitarian Church of Portland, 1011 Southwest 12th Avenue, Portland, OR 97201 - (503) 228-6389. In lieu of flowers, we would encourage contributions to the First Unitarian Church of Portland, First Unitarian Society of San Francisco, Planned Parenthood of Columbia Willamette, or the Oregon Food Bank.
