BIRTH: "The Friend"; 1667; ; vol 29, pg 244; ;lists his birth as London in 1667.
PROBATE: will; 1727; Doylestown Probate Court; recorded in Book #1, p107 on 8th day 2nd month, 1727; Doylestown PA.
His father brought him to America and returned to England. According to information provided by Mrs. John A. Scarborough, of Delta, PA: " It was said that John Jr. being somewhat irked by the strictness of the friends in whose care he had been left, ran away and lived with the Indians for a number of years. A statement in the Evening Bulletin of Philadelphia said that John Scarborough was interpreter for William Penn when the latter met with the Indians. In another unmarked clipping there was a similar statement." Samuel Preston, a great-grandson born in 1756, wrote in 1823 that according to tradition John Jr. was once instrumental in preventing and Indian War, and was to have often visited the Indians on religious missions for the Quakers. After his father returned to England, John Sr signed a power of attorney to John Jr for all of his land holdings in Bucks County, PA on Oct 15, 1696 in the presence of William Penn with William Penn Jr being a witness. John Jr subsequently purchased additional land in Bucks Co according to the Doylestown records. The last name of his wife, Mary, is unknown and could be either an indian name or possibly Mary Glading, as some records state that he was left in the care of the Gladings when his father returned to England. He was known as a blacksmith, whitesmith and coachmaker and was a very active member of the Quaker religion. "At a Men's Meeting at Buckingham Meeting House, 2nd of the 10th month, 1724 he was given a certificate to the Meeting of Elders and Ministers recommending him as a Minister. His son John became a well known and highly esteemed Quaker preacher." (Scarborough manuscript by Carrie Scarborough Thomas)
