In 1870 he was 21 and listed on the census with his father in Knox Co, OH. A delayed 1874 birth certificate for his son is recorded in Iowa City, IA.
then listed as Neuton with his wife and 3 children in 1880 Kansas census as a farmer.
Listed in Colorado in 1900, with his wife of 27 years - Irene, as a farmer and raising stock on his mortgaged farm. Listed with him is Simpson (21), Howard (18), James (15), Rose (13), and Lloyd (7). All 7 seven of their children were living at the time.
[Obituary] Cañon City Record - Thurs 2 May 1912
Newton Wells, a prominent and well known rancher of Woodruff, Colorado, died at his home there on Thursday from paralysis after an illness of a couple of weeks, aged sixty-two (sic) years and two months. Deceased was born at Mt Vernon, Ohio, February 25, 1849, but had lived in this state for many years. His ranch was located in the vicinity of Swallows in Pueblo county and was familiar to all who had occasion to visit that portion of the valley. Mr. Wells was a member of the Christian church and the funeral was held at Wilson’s undertaking chapel at 2 o’clock this afternoon and was under the direction of Rev. O.S. Reed. The children of the deceased are Halbert N. Wells, Ida S. Wells, Simpson S. Wells, Jas. C. Wells, Rose N. Wells and Thomas L. Wells, all of them residents of Colorado. The wife of the deceased died in Colorado Springs about a year ago and was brought here for burial. The interment this afternoon was at Lakeside cemetery.
